Dr Akhter Goolam Mahomed MBBCh FCP (Pulmonology) FCCP (USA)
Akhter obtained his medical degree from Wits University in 1984. He subsequently trained in Internal Medicine and Pulmonology through the post-graduate training programme affiliated to Wits University.
In 1990 he obtained his specialist qualification and was subsequently appointed consultant physician at Hillbrow Hospital. He was promoted to senior consultant physician in the division of pulmonary and critical care medicine in 1993 and in 1995 was made the principal Pulmonologist.
In 1995, he was elected as Fellow of The American College of Chest Physicians Akhter then took a year out in research at The Medical Research Council in Pretoria and spent a further two years as a research fellow at The National Heart and lung Institute, London, UK.
On his return he was appointed Principal Consultant Pulmonologist at Johannesburg General Hospital and Senior Lecturer at Wits Medical School. In 2002 Akhter embarked on full time private practice in Pretoria.
He has published widely in the scientific literature and sits on the committees of a wide variety of medical and social care organisations.
